Windows 11 and Windows 10
Prefer Windows Update or the PC maker’s model-specific page for routine devices. Use a component maker’s package when the OEM directs you there or when you have confirmed that a generic package supports the exact hardware and Windows release.
Windows on ARM
ARM devices require packages built for that architecture. Do not assume an x64 or x86 installer will support the device simply because the product family name looks familiar.
Older Windows releases
Manufacturer support may be limited or ended. Avoid forcing a newer package onto an unsupported release. Consider the security and support implications of continuing to use an operating system outside its supported lifecycle.
Laptops and prebuilt PCs
OEM packages may include power, display switching, audio, hotkey, camera, thermal, or firmware customizations. Start with the exact PC-maker support page unless its instructions explicitly direct you to the component manufacturer.
