Updating Chipset and Storage Drivers Safely

How to update platform chipset and storage controller drivers with minimal risk, and why order and backups matter.

Foundational drivers deserve extra care

Chipset drivers describe your motherboard's platform to Windows, including how the CPU, buses, and integrated controllers communicate. Storage drivers manage the controller that connects your drives, including modern NVMe SSDs. Because these sit close to the foundation of the system, updating them can affect stability broadly. That is a reason for care, not fear: done correctly, these updates are routine.

Understand what each one does

  • Chipset drivers are usually a collection of small drivers and INF files that let Windows correctly identify platform components. They rarely change dramatically but do get refreshed for new Windows builds and fixes.
  • Storage controller drivers govern how your operating system talks to drives. On some systems the storage driver is part of a RAID or rapid-storage package; on others Windows uses a standard built-in driver that works well.

Decide whether you actually need the update

These are not drivers to update on a whim. Good reasons include:

  • A fresh Windows install where devices are unrecognized.
  • A manufacturer fix for a specific stability or compatibility problem.
  • A new platform where the latest chipset package improves device detection.

If your system is stable, the storage driver Windows chose is working, and you have no errors, it is entirely reasonable to leave both alone. Storage drivers in particular should be changed cautiously, because the drive holding Windows depends on them.

Back up and create a restore point first

For chipset and especially storage, protect yourself before changing anything:

  • Create a system restore point.
  • For storage driver changes, make sure your important files are backed up independently, because a storage driver problem can, in rare cases, affect access to the drive.

Get the right package from the right source

  • For a branded PC or laptop, download the chipset and storage packages from the computer maker's support page for your exact model. OEMs validate these together with the rest of the system.
  • For a self-built desktop, get the chipset package from your motherboard vendor (ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI, ASRock) and the platform storage package from the appropriate platform vendor (Intel or AMD) as directed by the board maker.

Match your Windows edition and download only from official sources.

Install chipset before other drivers

Order matters. Install the chipset package first on a fresh system, because it helps Windows correctly enumerate other devices. After chipset, proceed to graphics, network, audio, and finally storage utilities if needed. Reboot when the installer requests it.

Handle storage drivers with particular caution

  • If Windows is running fine on its built-in storage driver, you often do not need a vendor storage driver at all. Do not install a RAID or rapid-storage package unless your configuration requires it.
  • If you do update, follow the vendor's instructions exactly. Some storage software must not be interrupted.
  • Do not switch the storage controller mode in BIOS/UEFI (for example between AHCI and RAID) on an installed Windows system without following a documented procedure, as that can make Windows unbootable.

Verify after installing

  • Check Device Manager for warning icons under system devices and storage controllers.
  • Confirm all drives are present and accessible.
  • Reboot once more and make sure the system starts normally.

If a chipset or storage update causes problems

  • Roll back the specific driver from Device Manager's Driver tab.
  • Use your restore point to revert.
  • If the machine will not boot after a storage change, use the Windows Recovery Environment to run System Restore.
