An OEM driver is one published by the company that made your device or your PC. Using Windows Update or the official manufacturer can reduce exposure to bundled adware, altered installers, and unrelated packages, but you still need to confirm the model, publisher, and compatibility before installing.
Know which manufacturer to visit
There are two situations, and they lead to different sites:
- Prebuilt PC or laptop. Start with the computer maker (for example Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, or Microsoft Surface). They customize drivers for specific models, including firmware and power management tuned to that chassis. This is generally the appropriate first source for a branded machine.
- Individual component. Go to the chip or device maker (for example NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, Realtek, Logitech, Canon, Epson, Brother, or others) when you built the PC yourself or you are updating a specific add-in part.
When in doubt for a branded laptop, prefer the OEM package over the generic component driver, because the OEM version accounts for the laptop's specific configuration.
Reach the official page safely
Type the manufacturer's known web address directly, or use a search engine and carefully verify the domain before clicking. Watch for lookalike domains and sponsored results that imitate a brand. Confirm the connection is secure and the domain matches the company you expect. Bookmark the real support page once you find it so you can return without searching again.
Identify your product on the page
Support sites offer a few ways to find your downloads:
- Automatic detection, where the site identifies your product. This is convenient but optional; you can typically proceed manually.
- Service tag or serial number lookup, which is the most precise method for branded PCs.
- Manual model selection, where you pick your product line and model from menus.
Enter the exact model or serial you recorded earlier. Precision reduces the risk of choosing a package for a similar but different device.
Choose the correct operating system
Select your Windows edition and confirm it is the 64-bit build if that is what you run. A driver built for a different Windows version may refuse to install or may install and then misbehave. If the site lists several versions of the same driver, the newest is usually appropriate, but read the notes.
Read before you download
Reputable download pages include a description and sometimes release notes. Scan them for:
- The specific models and Windows versions the package supports.
- Whether it is a "driver only" package or a full software suite with a control panel.
- Any prerequisites, such as installing a chipset driver first.
This is also where you decide whether you even need the update. If the notes describe fixes for problems you do not have, it is fine to skip it.
Verify the file after downloading
- Confirm the file came from the domain you trust.
- If the vendor publishes a checksum, you can compare it, though this is optional for most users.
- Keep the installer until you have confirmed everything works, in case you need to reinstall.
Install carefully
Run the installer and follow the prompts. If a Custom or Clean install option is offered and you are troubleshooting, it can help by clearing old settings, though it also resets your preferences. For a routine update, the standard option is fine. Reboot when asked, or reboot anyway to be safe.
What to avoid
- Third-party "driver download" portals that aggregate files, even if they look organized. You cannot verify what they have altered or bundled.
- "Driver updater" utilities that promise to scan and fix everything. They are unnecessary and often install adware or the wrong versions.
- Email links or pop-ups claiming your drivers are dangerously out of date.
Keep a record
Note the version and date of what you installed and where you got it. If a later update causes trouble, you will know exactly which known-good package to return to from the manufacturer's site.
